About Us

As the short description on our front page states, we are an established music store here in Madison, Wisconsin. Madison is both the Capitol of Wisconsin and the location of the largest branch of the University of Wisconsin. These two great institutions are located at either end of State Street, about 8 blocks in length, which spans about half of an isthmus between two large lakes, Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. From 1936 until 2001, Madison Music was located just about half way between the Capitol and UW at 414 State Street.

Musical Instruments: Madison, WI

In January 2002, we made the big move to new, expanded quarters on Madison's Beltline Highway that rings the Southern and Western sides of the city. Our address is 4253 West Beltline Highway, Madison WI 53711-3814. Our local phone number is (608) 257-5877 and our toll-free number is (800) 278-9080. For detailed directions see MADISON MUSIC LOCATION above or on the front page.

Madison Music Company

Old Location - Fond Memories!

We took this big step for a number of reasons, but the most important included expanded space for guitar display and playing, ample free parking, and an easy-to-get-to, central location.

Shop for High End Acoustic Guitar Brands

Madison Music was founded in 1936 under the name Patti Music. We changed the name of our store in 1994 to reflect our geographical home and location as we were drawing more and more of our patronage from across the country, not just here in our own backyard. Though we always carried fretted instruments, in the 1980's and especially in the last 20 years, we have been more intensively developing our high-end acoustic guitar, mandolin, resonator and banjo inventory and reputation. With a growing stock of fine and rare instruments, more and more people are seeking us out from all over the country.

Choose the Best Acoustic Instrument

We feel that we should have as many instruments in stock as we can possibly afford and display so that a customer can

choose from a wide variety of makers and a wide variety of models by each maker. We think it should be up to the customer to decide what is the best make and model for him or her, not us by limiting selection to a few choices. Of course many of our guitar builders make only a few units a month with long lead times so it is hard to always have the perfect selection at any one time, but we have new additions arriving weekly. If you don't see what you are looking for, just ask us and we'll let you know what's coming! Or, better yet, we'll order it for you.

We provide a quiet room where much of our stock is on display, to play and compare for the only critical ear that really counts, your own. It's amazing what the results can sometimes be when someone who has a pretty firm idea about what they like and don't like actually gets to try out the competition. Some long held convictions have been changed in a short time in that back room. On the other hand, it is nice to have a conviction confirmed by trying the best that is made in America and then sticking with the old tried and true.

If you are coming to Madison, see if you can swing around our way and spend an hour or two with us. If you can't make it anytime soon but you have questions, call or e-mail us and we'll help in any way that we can.
